Questions
What are the GST rates in 2026?
Nil, 5%, 18% and 40% are the main slabs after the September 2025 rationalisation. Gold and jewellery are 3%, cut and polished diamonds 1.5%, rough diamonds 0.25%.
When is it CGST plus SGST rather than IGST?
Within a state the tax splits equally into CGST and SGST. Across states the whole amount is charged as IGST. The total is identical either way.
Important
GST 2.0, effective 22 September 2025, moved to two main slabs — 5% and 18% — plus 40% on luxury and sin goods. The 12% and 28% slabs are largely gone: bricks and roofing tiles keep 12%, and pan masala and tobacco stay at 28% until compensation cess obligations are settled.
